History
In 1910, Michael J. Harney opened up a small sheet metal
shop in Duluth Minnesota that specialized in architectural cornice work
and stamped metal ceilings. Duluth in 1910 was growing rapidly. The lumber
industry was at its peak and iron ore was the new natural resource being
shipped out on Lake Superior. Mr. Harney was kept busy working on the
abundance of new buildings being built downtown.
In 1935, after Mr. Harney's death, the business was purchased by Norman
Gjerberg. Under his ownership, the company expanded into other areas. They
fabricated various specialty sheet metal items, from bread pans for the
CCC camps to parts for the shipyards. They installed warm air heating
systems, boiler stacks, and kitchen exhaust fans. With the exception of a
two year period during World War II when steel was scarce, Mr. Gjerberg
kept the business on a steady path into the post war period.
In 1952 he sold the business to two 15 year employees, Earl Jam and Emmett
Broten. Mr. Jam ran the heating and ventilating department. Mr. Broten ran
the roofing and architectural sheet metal department. Over the next 25
years the company grew steadily. The two men increased the company's
presence in commercial heating and ventilating, stainless steel
fabrication for the food industry, and built-up roofing.
In 1976, after finishing college and the sheet metal apprenticeship
program, Mr. Jam's son, Mark, purchased Emmett Broten's company stock.
Control of the company gradually changed hands until Earl's retirement in
1985. While in the hands of the 2nd generation, the name Duluth Sheet
Metal became synonymous with stainless steel fabrication and food industry
construction. By 1994 it had obtained NSF certification in stainless steel
fabrication. It is the only company in northern Minnesota with that
certification.
Today, the company ships specialty fabrications
around the world, NSF certified products across the country, and provides
HVAC, sheet metal fabrication, and roofing services around the region.
